*Flying House

National Geographic has created a real-life flying house inspired by Pixar's animated film Up. National Geographic Channel collaborated with a team of scientists, engineers, and two world-class balloon pilots to launch a 16' X 16' house 18' tall with 300 8' colored weather balloons from a private airfield east of Los Angeles, and to set a new world record for the largest balloon cluster flight ever attempted. The entire experimental aircraft was more than 10 stories high, reached an altitude of over 10,000 feet, and flew for approximately one hour. The filming of the event, will be part of a new National Geographic Channel series called How Hard Can it Be?

Το National Geographic Channel σε συνεργασία με μια ομάδα επιστημόνων, μηχανικών και δύο παγκοσμίου φήμης πιλότους αερόστατων κατασκεύασε και κατάφερε να "εκτοξεύσει" ένα αληθινό ιπτάμενο σπίτι εμπνευσμένο από την ταινία Up της Pixar. Το απίστευτο αυτό εγχείρημα έλαβε χώρα σε ιδιωτική αερολέσχη στα ανατολικά του Λος Αντζελες. Το πειραματικό "αεροσκάφος", που χρειάστηκε 300 χρωματιστά μπαλόνια για να κατασκευαστεί, είχε το ύψος ενός δεκαόροφου κτιρίου ενώ έκανε μια πτήση δάρκειας περίπου μιας ώρας φθάνοντας σε ύψος 10,000 ποδιών. Η διαδικασία κατασκευής και πτήσης φιλμογραφήθηκε και θα παρουσιαστεί σε μια νεά εκπομπή του National Geographic Channel που ονομάζεται How Hard Can it Be?

*Your Rainbow Panorama

Olafur eliasson's highly anticipated new installation 'your rainbow panorama' is now complete.

The permanent elevated structure provides a 360º view of the city of århus, denmark. Suspended between the city and the sky, the viewing platform insists on the sensory engagement of those who enter it. Measuring 150 meters around, the transparent glass unit is designed to act as a visual compass for the city, its colors marking the physical location of each visitor. The curved interior wall becomes a wide band of illumination with uncertain limits and distances. This flow of non repeatable sensations challenges the interaction between corporeal features and conscious awareness. As Eliasson claims, he enables the procedure of sense-perception 'the possibility to evaluate not just what we see but also how we see it.'

"When surroundings are thought of as stable, we tend to lose a feeling of responsibility for the environments in which we move. Space becomes a background for interaction rather than a co-producer of interaction. But what takes place is, in fact, a double movement: The user’s interaction with other people co-produces space which in turn is a co-producer of interaction. O Ισλανδος καλλιτέχνης Olafur Eliasson δημιούργησε έναν διάδρομο-ουράνιο τόξο πάνω στο δώμα του μουσείου Τέχνης ARoS στην πόλη Aarhus της Δανίας. Ο τίτλος της εγκατάστασης είναι “Your rainbow panorama” και η πρόθεση του δημιουργού ήταν να δώσει την ευκαιρία στον επισκέπτη που διασχίζει τον ημι-αιωρούμενο πολύχρωμο δακτύλιο, να έχει μία πανοραμική άποψη της πόλης μέσα από ένα χρωματικό φίλτρο.

*Merry Christmas with 40,000 recycled plastic bottles

Στην πόλη Kaunas της Λιθουανίας επιστρατεύτηκε η καλλιτέχνης Jolanta Smidtienė για τη χριστουγεννιάτικη διακόσμησή της. Με γνώμονα την σημερινή οικονομική κατάσταση, η καλλιτέχνης θέλησε να αποδείξει πως μπορεί να δημιουργηθεί κάτι πολύ όμορφο από καθημερινά αντικείμενα. Έτσι, προέκυψε ένα διαφορετικό χριστουγεννιάτικο δέντρο ύψους δεκατριών μέτρων από 40.000 ανακυκλωμένα πλαστικά μπουκάλια. Τη νύχτα το δέντρο φωτίζεται από το εσωτερικό δημιουργώντας ένα λαμπερό, ημιδιαφανές σμαραγδένιο πράσινο δέντρο που με τη διαφορετικότητα και την απλότητά δεσπόζει στα πρωτοσέλιδα της χώρας.

The city of Kaunas, Lithuania approached the artist Jolanta Smidtienė to assist with their annual holiday decoration. In light of the current financial state, the artist was challenged to create something beautiful from everyday objects. The result is a different christmas tree, 13-meter tall, created by 40,000 recycled plastic bottles. At night, the tree is lit from the inside resulting in a glowing, translucent, emerald green spruce that's making headlines across the country.

Με μικρο-τροποποιήσεις στη μορφή των μεταλλικών πλαισίων που απαρτίζουν τους ηλεκτροφόρους πυλώνες, οι Choi+Shine Architects κατάφεραν να τους μετατρέψουν σε γιγαντιαία αγάλματα του Ισλανδικού τοπίου, ανάγωντας το σχεδιασμό τους σε υψηλότερο επίπεδο από την απλή λειτουργικότητα. Οραματίστηκαν αυτές τις μοντέρνες Καρυάτιδες ύψους εκατόν πενήντα ποδιών ως γαλήνιες οντότητες που εντάσσονται στο τοπίο και υπηρετούν τους ανθρώπους μεταφέροντας σιωπηλά την ηλεκτρική ενέργεια σε όλα τα μήκη και τα πλάτη, μέρα και νύχτα, με ηλιοφάνεια ή χιόνι.

Making only minor alterations to well established steel-framed tower design, Choi+Shine Architects have transformed the mundane electrical pylons into statues on the Icelandic landscape, elevating the towers to something more than merely a functional design of necessity. It is envisioned that these one hundred and fifty foot tall, modern caryatids will take on a quiet authority, belonging to their landscape yet serving the people, silently transporting electricity across all terrain, day and night, sunshine or snow.

*These designs were submitted as a competition entry in March of 2008 to Landsnet, Iceland national power transmission company who was working in collaboration with the Association of Icelandic Architects. The competition’s goal was to obtain new ideas in types and appearances for 220kV high-voltage towers and lines. The competition emphasized that specific consideration be given to the visual impact of the towers (or lines) and that careful consideration be given to the appearance of towers near urban areas and unsettled regions.

*The Recycling Project / Thessaloniki

Με αφορμή το αντίστοιχο project The Good Bike Project, στο Τορόντο του Καναδά, που ξεκίνησε όταν μερικοί νέοι άνθρωποι αποφάσισαν να δώσουν και πάλι ζωή σε ένα παρατημένο ποδήλατο, τα μέλη του Hellenic Architecture Agora του skyscrapercity.com αποφάσισαν να εγκαινιάσουν έναν αντίστοιχο θεσμό στη Θεσσαλονίκη. Σκοπός του project είναι η συγκέντρωση ποδηλάτων τα οποία οι ιδιοκτήτες τους δεν χρειάζονται πια. Τα παλιά ποδήλατα βάφονται ολοκληρωτικά, διακοσμούνται με λουλούδια και τοποθετούνται σε συγκεκριμένα σημεία της πόλης σαν street art. Κάθε χρώμα αντιπροσωπεύει και κάτι διαφορετικό:

Τα κίτρινα ποδήλατα αντικατοπτρίζουν έαν χώρο ιστορικό για τη Θεσσαλονίκη και τους κατοίκους της.

Τα πορτοκαλί ποδήλατα τοποθετούνται σε μέρη που αποτελούν σημεία συνάντησης για τους Θεσσαλονικείς, τα λεγόμενα hot spots.

Τα γαλάζια ποδήλατα αφιερώνονται στον Ερνέστ Εμπράρ, τον αρχιτέκτονα που οραματίστηκε μία διαφορετική Θεσσαλονίκη, αλλά δυστυχώς ποτέ δεν την αντίκρυσε στο ακέραιο.

Τα πράσινα ποδήλατα, όπως είναι λογικό, βρίσκονται σε σημεία όπου το πράσινο λείπει.

Τα φούξια ποδήλατα αφιερώνονται στους εθελοντές της πόλης.

Το βασικότερο είναι η διατήρηση του εθελονικού και ερασιτεχνικού χαρακτήρα της δράσης.

Ήδη χρωματιστά ποδήλατα έχουν αρχίσει να φυτρώνουν στους δρόμους της Θεσσαλονίκης!!

The members of the Hellenic Architecture Agora of skyscrapercity.com decided to launch a new project in Thessaloniki, inspired by The Good Bike Project in Toronto, Canada, where some young people decided to bring a neglected bike back to life. The aim of the project is to collect and reuse bicycles that are no longer used by their owners. The old bikes are painted, decorated with flowers and placed in specific parts of the city as street art.
